Strawberries from the Garden

Strawberries from the Garden

It's Planting Time!

This weekend the weather was in the upper 50's so I put on a jacket and proceeded to prepare some of my beds and started planting! Thank goodness for my husband helping me! My left hand is slowing me down. I have what the doctor thinks is a scaphoid fracture in my left hand. Never fear, I split a glove, covered the hand and taped it closed so I could work the soil and plant with my right hand and not get my left hand dirty. Quite a sight I'm sure!

I planted two types of peas; the Early Frosty Pea and the Early Alaska Pea. Both varieties take about 55-60 days to mature so I plant them everywhere. By the time they're done, I'll be able to plant my warm-natured veggies such as tomatoes and eggplant in their place.

I also planted spinach, ruby queen beets, hollow crown parsnips, purple top white globe turnips, scarlet nantes carrots, shallots, and yellow onions.

Let the gardening begin! There's no turning back now!

  1. I've planted similar veggies, except beets and carrots. I didn't know they're cool weather veggies.

  2. It varies with carrots. It seems the scarlet nantes variety does okay when it's cool. You just have to remember it takes a while before they show their faces! :)

In terms of beets, they seem to do pretty well in early spring. It gets too hot in the summer here for them to do well in the summer.

  3. Your garden looks great! The bed with the lattice is awesome. I'm going to steal that idea. I also like the strawberry bed setup you have there. Pretty cool. What region to you live in? I'm around Indianapolis. I'm hoping to plant my seeds this week, work schedule allowing.

  4. Thanks for the compliments! My husband helps me to build things the way I envision them. It's great! The lattice is great for peas and beans! I'll post pictures as soon as my strawberries are all up and filled in. They cover the strawberry bed and they produce well into fall.

I live in Maryland and on some charts I am zone 6 and on some I am zone 7a. I tend to follow the time schedules for zone 7 and things do pretty well.

    Good luck with your planting!
